Understanding Food Cravings vs. Real Hunger

Real physical hunger and a food craving can feel similar in the moment, but they generally behave differently. True hunger builds gradually, can be satisfied by a range of different foods, and is usually accompanied by physical signs like a growling stomach or low energy.

A craving, by contrast, often appears suddenly, targets a very specific food (rarely "I could eat a plate of broccoli"), and is frequently triggered by emotion, stress, habit, or environmental cues (seeing or smelling a specific food) rather than actual energy need.

Neither response is something to feel guilty about — cravings are a normal part of being human, not a character flaw. Understanding the difference just helps with responding deliberately: real hunger genuinely needs food, while a craving can sometimes be addressed just as well by identifying and dealing with what actually triggered it (stress, boredom, a specific emotional state).
