The Role of Carbohydrates in Recovery, Not Just Protein
Recovery nutrition conversations often focus heavily on protein, but carbohydrates play an equally essential — and sometimes overlooked — role, especially after prolonged or repeated training sessions.
Intense exercise depletes glycogen (the body's stored form of carbohydrate) in working muscles. Replenishing that glycogen is essential for feeling ready to perform again, and carbohydrate is the primary nutrient the body uses to rebuild those stores. Pairing carbohydrate with protein after training has also been shown to support muscle repair slightly better than protein alone, in part by supplying the energy the repair process itself requires.
The practical takeaway isn't "carbs over protein" — it's that a genuinely complete recovery meal or snack includes both, in a ratio that depends on training volume and goals, rather than one nutrient monopolizing all the recovery-nutrition attention.
