Nutrition Strategies for Youth Athletes

Young athletes are unique: they're training and competing while also growing, which means their nutrition needs to support both athletic performance and normal development at the same time — a combination adults don't need to balance.

Restrictive dieting or aggressive calorie cutting is generally inappropriate for a growing young athlete and should only ever be considered under the direct guidance of a pediatrician or sports dietitian, never self-directed. Regular meals and snacks that include a genuine variety of foods tend to serve growing athletes better than a narrowly optimized "performance diet" borrowed from adult athletes.

Hydration habits are also worth specific attention — children and teens can be less reliable at recognizing early thirst cues than adults, so scheduled water breaks during practice (rather than waiting for a request) are a simple, practical safeguard.
