How to Adjust Nutrition During Injury or Time Off

An injury or extended time away from training changes the body's energy needs, but often not as dramatically as people fear — activity level drops, but the body still requires significant energy for tissue repair, especially in the early stages of healing.

Protein needs typically stay the same or even increase slightly during recovery from an injury, since protein supports tissue repair directly. Total calorie needs usually do drop somewhat with reduced activity, but drastically cutting food intake during an injury can actually slow healing by depriving the body of the resources it needs to repair itself.

The more useful mental shift during time off is moving away from "how do I avoid gaining weight" toward "how do I support healing," which usually means maintaining a reasonably consistent, nutrient-adequate diet rather than making dramatic cuts — ideally guided by a doctor or physical therapist's specific recovery timeline.
