How Age Affects Recovery Time

Recovery generally slows somewhat with age, and this is a real, biologically-grounded pattern rather than just a feeling — muscle protein synthesis (the process of rebuilding muscle tissue) becomes somewhat less efficient with age, and some inflammatory markers after intense exercise tend to stay elevated slightly longer in older adults.

This doesn't mean older athletes can't train hard or recover well — it means the recovery-nutrition fundamentals matter MORE, not less, with age. Slightly higher protein intake per meal has been shown to help offset age-related declines in muscle protein synthesis efficiency, and adequate, quality sleep becomes an even more important recovery lever.

Practically, this often means an older athlete benefits from being somewhat more deliberate about the basics (protein spread across the day, sleep consistency, adequate rest between hard sessions) rather than needing a fundamentally different recovery approach than a younger athlete.
