Eating for Explosive Power vs. Endurance

Eating for Explosive Power vs. Endurance

Power-based sports (sprinting, weightlifting, jumping) rely on short, maximal bursts of effort fueled largely by the body's immediate energy systems, which don't depend heavily on what was eaten in the hour right before performing. For these athletes, day-to-day nutritional consistency and adequate overall fueling matter more than precise pre-event timing.

Endurance sports (distance running, cycling, triathlon) draw much more heavily on ongoing carbohydrate and fat availability over a sustained effort, which makes both longer-term glycogen stores and in-the-moment fueling during the event genuinely important.

This doesn't mean power athletes can ignore carbohydrates or endurance athletes can ignore protein — both still need a complete, balanced diet. It means the RELATIVE emphasis and the fueling-during-performance strategy differ meaningfully based on which energy systems the sport actually demands.
