Carb Cycling for Strength Athletes

Carb Cycling for Strength Athletes

Carb cycling means deliberately varying carbohydrate intake day to day, typically eating more on heavy training days and less on rest or light days, while protein usually stays fairly constant throughout.

For strength athletes specifically, the logic is that heavy lifting days benefit from having more glycogen (stored carbohydrate) available to fuel high-effort sets, while rest days — with lower energy demand — don't need the same carbohydrate load. Cycling can also be a tool within a broader body-composition goal, allowing higher-carb days to support performance while lower-carb days help manage overall calorie balance.

Carb cycling adds real complexity to meal planning and isn't necessary for most people to see good results — a consistent, adequate carbohydrate intake works well for the majority of lifters. It's best viewed as a more advanced option to consider once basic nutrition and training consistency are already well established, not a starting point.
